Our History
Rebati Santé Mentale (RSM) was born from hope, resilience, and a steadfast belief in the power of community healing. Long before it had a name, the spirit of Rebati lived in the hearts of Haitian mental health professionals who recognized the importance of culturally grounded care for the Haitian people.
For over 26 years, this vision has grown, guided by the passion and leadership of Dr. Guerda Nicolas, Dr. Richard Douyon, and Dr. Marie Claude Rigaud. These trailblazers understood that mental wellness is essential not just for individuals, but for the health and future of an entire nation.
Although the seeds of Rebati were planted more than two decades ago, the organization's formation was catalyzed by a defining moment in Haiti’s history. Following the devastating earthquake in January 2010, the need for coordinated, culturally competent mental health support reached an unprecedented level. In response, Rebati Santé Mentale was officially established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization later that year. What began as an urgent response to crisis has blossomed into a thriving, mission-driven movement dedicated to rebuilding—Rebati—a strong and sustainable mental health system in Ayiti.
From its inception, Rebati has been deeply rooted in collaboration, cultural integrity, and community empowerment. The organization’s journey took shape during the Haitian Mental Health Summit at the University of Miami in June 2010—a historic gathering that united professionals from around the globe committed to supporting Haiti’s mental health needs.
Today, Rebati Santé Mentale stands as a leader in mental health transformation across Ayiti and the diaspora. Our work spans consultation, professional training, community education, trauma response, and culturally sensitive research. Every program, partnership, and initiative is grounded in love for Ayiti and a belief that true healing must come from within the community.
Rebati is more than an organization—it is a movement to uplift, to restore, and to reimagine what is possible when mental wellness is placed at the heart of a nation’s future. We are proud of how far we’ve come and excited for the continued journey ahead, hand in hand with the people and communities we serve.
